Carrot in a Cake – Carrot Cake!

April 1, 2013

TEST So Easter is said and done, but I’m not ready to move on just yet.  Rather than call this an Easter cake, I’ll call it a SPRINGTIME, It’s 60 degrees outside (YAY!) cake!

I made white cake batter and tinted it orange, baked it on a cookie sheet that was roughly the size of a jelly roll pan (I don’t know what a jelly roll pan actually IS, I found a measurement online and wung it.)  SO! Orange tinted cake in a fairly large flat pan.  It took 18-20 minutes to cook and mine was not uniformly flat, it raised up in the center some, but it worked out fine for me.  I used a carrot shaped cookie cutter and cut out as many carrots as I could get.  Here starts the pictures:

I put a little chocolate cake batter in the bottom of the pan so they’d stand up nicely and lined the bottom of a long loaf pan with the carrots, pointy sides up.  Then I added the rest of the cake batter, and then maybe 3/4 of ANOTHER cake batter.  The loaf pan is LONG, it’s a LOT of cake!

I had enough batter left to make 6 little cupcakes, too.

We decided since this was a LOT of cake and we wouldn’t be able to get through it all before it went stale, we’d cut it in half and freeze part for next time we need some tasty cake!  So heeeeere’s the big carrot reveal!!

When you turn it out of the pan, the carrots are right-side-up again!

Big Girl helped decorate the top – she put a layer of chocolate glaze that slowly oozed over the sides to look a little like shiny, scrumptious mud.

Then she layered some crushed oreos on top while the glaze was still wet, and just a small handful of green sprinkles to look like grass trying to peek through.

Little Girl used a similar decorating technique on the cupcakes:

The carrot leaves were melted candy wafers put in a plastic or piping bag and squirted out on to foil to make the leafy shape.  We slit starter-holes for those, then poked em right in and added just one small bunny cupcake pic.

Not only it is ADORABLE, but everyone that’s tried it (The girls and hubs) has said YUM!!

I’m thinking this is a great springtime dessert, or for a garden or tea party.  There’s lots of ways we could decorate the top, with chocolates or candy flowers, and of course I’m pondering other  things we can “plant” inside.

making panda bread

July 17, 2011

oh, pinterest, why you do me like you do?  one of my online friendies found some “panda bread”  and said “oh suuuure, c’mon, you should make it.”  so i did.

i got to use that.  a dough hook for my mixer.   or part of my new pirate costume!

behold!  i made dough!

this was my first attempt at dough, i was quite impressed with myself.

i used the recipe i found here (click me!) since there were no pictures on the recipe, i found a youtube video… not in english, but awesome.  if you want to make this, totally search “making panda bread” on the tube.  and feel all smart cuz you figured out something in japanese.  or chinese, or whatever it was…

i feel all cookery and what not when i have flour on my hands.

just like in the video…

roll.

fold.

roll and fold some more.

bake.

i got a little nervous because i didn’t think the dough was rising like it should.  i’m not sure what to do about that, but *angels singing*  ahhhh-ahhhh-AAAAAH!  panda bread:

HOW STINKING CUTE IS THIS?!?!?

and it’s tasty, too.  i might not sleep thinking of the possibilities.  can you imagine ELMO??!?  HELLO KITTY?!?

OMGGGGG!

mommy’s secret

June 22, 2010

my children like to share.  they share with each other, they try to share with me.  they try to share my lunch, they try to share my drinks.  i don’t like to share as much, and i’ve taken up a trick my mom used to use on my sister because she didn’t want my sister asking for sips of her TAB, or whatever she was drinking (it was the 80s)… put it in a coffee cup and tell ’em it’s coffee.  now i don’t have to share my drinks.

suntea isn’t quite as pretty in an opaque mug, but it didn’t have little girl slobber in it, either!  and i added the star icecubes because they make me smile.  =)

it’s 61.0 degrees!

February 11, 2009

holy cow!!  spring for a day!!

it’s been so sunny and bright, i forget that it’s still only february and we have months more to go of the grey-ness and the cold…  or maybe i’m just trying to ignore that fact.  the girls have been so good and such a pleasure lately, we’ve been playing and having all kinds of fun.  they’ve been going to bed earlier (and getting up earlier), but i love it when we have a little routine that’s working out for us.  hope it sticks around like the gorgeous weather!

mug shrinky dinks - set of 6

i’m really going to get around to listing these in the shop  shortly… i haven’t made shrinky dinks since we got the new toaster oven.  it might be time to drag that stuff out again.  i wanted to make some swirly steam for these mugs, but i’ll wait for next time i have to list them.

we have the sizzix “big whatever” at work  now, they say you can use it with ANY dies, so i’m making plans for new dies to buy and new designs for the shrinkies!  with the weather today, i’m dreaming of flowers and ladybugs, and all things SPRING!  if only i can keep myself away from facebook long enough to make anything!  =D

how about a nice snack?

August 15, 2008

the girls helped me make brownies this morning.  i’d love to say they’re flour-less or i shredded the chocolate myself, but they are pillsbury – 10 for $10.  the smell of my raspberry tea brewing while these were cooling was so comfy and nice.  i could hardly wait to dig in!mid morning snack by you.

so now there’s this…

May 27, 2008

by fishseddy , and i must have at least a few of them.  this is all thanks to julia, at herebehippogriffs who said  “life is too short to spend breakfast lunch and dinner with bowls you despise. ”  now, i don’t dispise any of my dishes, they’re just fine, but oh, i’m sure they”d LOVE to have some friends like alice and OH MY GOSH, there’s a tea party cereal bowl.  p.s. my birthday is in august, buy now and beat the rush.  i’d like 2, please.  for when one is in the wash.  p.s.s., they are on sale right now.

ok, i’ll stop with the begging, and we will resume the regularly scheduled blog in a few days =)
