Valentine Crafts

February 9, 2012

I just wrote a post on my work’s blog that’ll be published this weekend about keeping crafting simple.  I wish I could take my own advice, cuz today I have lost my mind.  I was looking for ideas for the girls to make their class Valentine’s and found all kinds of other things, too!  Like using chalkboard paint on $1 boxes of chocolate from the drug store:

and wrapping tootsie roll banks with paper to make them a little more festive:

ridiculous how easy they are to make, and adorable, too!

I think Big Girl might like to make bookmarks for her friends as Valentine’s, first grade is all about reading.  I made a couple of prototypes that I’ll give to my girls as Valentine’s.  The class ones will be made with smaller clips.

I think my girls are going to love ALL the treats I’ve made today!

I put a few sets of magnets in my etsy shop  too that are a little on the Valentine-y side but work for anyone who likes pink, or hearts, or polka dots, or strawberries or cherries or lots of other things:

Lots of treats for everyone!

rainbow mobile

April 28, 2011

ages ago i painted some wooden circles and hearts.  hunny drilled holes in them for me, and then i waited… and moved the little pieces from here to there waiting to dig out some fishing line.  it took a trip to the in-laws and a request to my father-in-law for me to finally get some line to finish it.

(nevermind that schmere on the counter, it’s mod podge and won’t come off. dumb charcoal counters)

i hung it from the cabinet knobs to be sure the pieces were even-ish.  then took it outside.  we have nothing to hang anything from outside.  aaaand it was pouring rain today.

so i came back inside and hung it from a hook in the ceiling in the spare bedroom (we call it the changing room)

and that might be where it stays!

primary cakeballs

April 7, 2011

people bring me lots of ideas.  people say “oh! i saw this and thought of you! you have to make this!” so i have a MILLION ideas back-logged in my head. (sometimes i wonder why THEY don’t make the things themselves… maybe they like to see me flail, i don’t know.)  Karyn, a sweet customer at the scrapbook store had an idea for me the other night.  it involved sliced mini marshmallows, colored sugar and a blob of melted choclate.

easy peasy.  i started making them mono chromatic and they were lovely…

then i got a little more adventurous and mixing up the petals on the flowers:

i liked them that way, best.  they reminded me of this book we used to get at the library all the time…

we loved that book, i should see if i can find it next time we go.  anyway, don’t they kinda remind you of a child’s crayon drawing?

and since they are meant as cakeball toppers for the preschool Spaghetti Dinner, they’re PERFECT!

might have to taste test one, first.

rainbow flower pots

March 16, 2011

you might’ve guessed, i’m in to rainbows lately.  i’m SO ready for it not to be cold and rainy.  but this is CT so OWELL

rainbows!  on flower pots!

i made a sample first and showed it to the girls.  of course they wanted to make their own.  it’s tough to do projects like this with them because i think the end result is so precious, i want to put it in the window and not use them as they were meant to be used.  but the girls are already begging to fill them with dirt and seeds.

maybe they can make me another set so i won’t feel so bad….

my window is so much brighter now!

pumpkins, (fake) pumpkins everywhere.

October 28, 2010

i didn’t think it was possible, but i have fallen in love with fake foam pumpkins.  they’re a great size, and acrylic paints work great on them.  today i made a queenie monogrammed one, just for me:

then i blinged that bad boy out:

i’m looking for a template for another idea i have (of COURSE i have more of these fake pumpkins, i never buy just one of anything!) and between school costume parades and work tomorrow, i hope to crank out at least one more blingie pumpkin.

cuz they are awesome!

the end

September 28, 2010

once at the end of a bedtime story, i closed the book and said “the end, go to sleep.”  the girls thought it was HIlarious.  since then, that’s been part of our bedtime ritual.  for a while it was “B.N. go to sleep” according to babycakes and now it’s not bedtime without the little saying.  why am i telling you this? i. don’t. know.

i finished the pumpkin topiary today:

it’s absolutely adorable.  it’s the first of the halloween decor for this year, so it’s a little out of place at the moment, but that’s change in the next few days.

eeeeeeeee, i’m kray-zeeeeeee…

September 27, 2010

i’ve got halloween on my mind, i’ve got christmas in my diningroom.  it’s like orange and black and red and green have exploded all over the main level of my house for the moment.  tonight, i started a pumpkin topiary in the kitchen.

babycakes picked out the white and orange.. i couldn’t decide.  there were orange glitter ones and black ones, too.  how COULD i decide?  let the 4 year old, that’s what i say.  i was looking for a shiny black bucket to use as a base, but after 2 craft stores i gave up and went with the clay pot.

and a whole lot of black paint.

turns out, i don’t really have the patience for this.  omg, paint???  wet paint???  that has to dry?!?!  i don’t have time for these shenanigans!!

once the paint dries overnight i’ll have to do another coat, and i’m pondering a layer of glow-in-the-dark mod podge, but maybe not… i’m thinking white christmas lights, i don’t have to wait for them to dry.  once the big parts are assembled, i have some cute Cute CUTE glitters and feathery embellishments to add – can’t wait to show you!
