Watch This Space

March 15, 2013

Making a few new products for the shop, based on some old ones.  Now I have some “Countdown to Baby” calendars that work AFTER the baby is born, too – as a I Am This Old type calendar! Yay!

Baby feet! *squee!*

Baby boy zoo animals, LOVE the monkeys.

I’ve had these wooden pieces made for ages, and finally got around to making a few – double decker calendars – months, days of the week and a few other sayings.

And some regular calendars, cool designs:

And there’s so much more to come!

So There’s That

March 5, 2013

We got about 3 gallons of maple sap over the course of 2 1/2 days.  I filtered it, I boiled it a while, I put it in my crockpot.  Then I didn’t know when to stop.  Here’s what we got:

It’s a pretty color and it’s thickened up since it’s been in the fridge.

I mighta let it go too long.  It’s kinda grainy, like it’s saturated w sugar.  Sooooo…. maybe I can turn it in to that maple sugar candy like we get at the fall fairs (YUMM-O!)?  Or it can sit in my fridge forever as I reminder that we could do it if we wanted to?

The sap was flowing again and we’ve got maybe another gallon and a half so far today…  Try it again?  Probably.

P.S. I just found this blog post by Simple Little Home and we are SO doing this.

Almost-end-of-summer wrap up

August 28, 2012

You know, busy, stuff, things, summer ending, blah, blah….

This happened:

B.Cakes is now really and officially 6.  Wow!

We had a fun party with some of her friends at the local icecream shop, it was the PERFECT place to have a party!

There were tough decisions to be made, but we all got through it somehow…

Coming up, ALL CHRISTMAS ALL THE TIMEZ!!!

wooden thread spool Christmas countdown calendars – in styles to please everyone…

all those teeny tiny little numbers, oi!

also, lots and lots of perpetual calendars:

There are so many fun new paper designs, these have been really fun to make.

We’ve got 1 more week til school starts, we are winding down but I have plans for a few more fun things up my sleeve… stay tuned!

Chugging along…

June 9, 2012

Last night I was working on my new About Me page on etsy and I think I said some really nice things about myself.  While looking for pictures to use, I took a little walk down memory lane…  Being on a local daytime television show, craft shows in the rain, cutting and pasting on New Years Eve while watching shoot-em-up movies, and our marathon crafting session making the project for Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.  Seriously, how cool was that?

(that was so freakin’ cool)

It was fun looking back, but it made me wonder what the future holds, what else could possibly happen…  I’m ready for the next adventure!  Til then, I’ll be here cutting and pasting and pointing and bossing.  And waiting.

good bye summer, hello rock candy

October 7, 2011

i’m going to miss summer, this one was a good one.  the girls learned to swim (mostly), we had some great days hanging out and enjoying everything we could find to do.  the colors this year were just so vibrant and fun.

one more colorful project i tried this summer that met mixed results was rock candy.  i won’t  bother with a recipe because i didn’t find a real winner, but feel free to share one that works with me!

there’s sugar and water and mixing and boiling and mixing and waiting and all that… then food coloring and a little flavoring.  and 2 more lbs of sugar than you think you’ll need.  look, pretty!

(and mason jars, too!  woo hoo!)

skewers and clothespins are involved.  how hard can it be?

there’s  whoooole lot of waiting and hoping.  the first batch… nuthin.  sticks in colored water for a week.  so i tried again and got something.  i don’t know what i was expecting, other than MORE.  but here we go:

they’re not so bad, i guess…

next time i might try string instead of sticks…  and see what i can get!

I Spy Bottles

June 16, 2011

or: one of the 47 craft projects i’ll have to do to get rid of 20 lbs of dried rice.

back in the spring i coordinated the pre-school’s annual spaghetti dinner.  the centerpieces were super cheap and wicked easy (just like me!) – handmade cardstock pinwheels in little buckets filled with rice.

that was months ago, and now i have the bag of 20 lbs of rice hanging out, taking up a lot of space, and with the huuuge potential for a mess.  after asking my twitter pals, the suggestion of coloring the rice and making ispy bottles was the most popular suggestion.

recipe for colored rice:

1 1/2 cup rice, capful of rubbing alcohol, coupla squirts of food coloring.  SEAL THE BAG and shake.  you’d think the “seal the bag” part is a given, but i’ll be picking up purple rice from every nook and cranny in my kitchen for the next 14 years….  you’ve been warned.  once the rice is the color you want, spread it out to dry on a piece of waxed paper.  it only takes 15 minutes, maybe a half hour and you’re ready to rock and roll.

ohhhh, so pretty….

i gathered all the little trinkets i could find, but i had to find 2 of everything… i’m not Noah, i’m the mom of 2 little girls close in age, so everything has to be the same or it’s a whole lotta “why did she get….”  (i hate that)

this is most of it…  also a shell, a christmas light bulb, and one special trinket so that they girls could tell whose was whose.

we used empty Gatorade bottles, cleaned with the wrapper removed, they were just the right size.

(i think she’s counting rice grains.  or figuring the volume of the container.  that’s just the way she is…)

there was much shaking, and lots of “ohh, i see the ___” then the other one would have to shake theirs and find that in their bottle…

i hot glued the lids on, hunny’s only comment was “you know what’s gonna happen if someone takes the top off…” killjoy.  whatever, they’re closed now.

and now i only have to come up with a craft for the other 19 pounds of rice!

tulle poofy things!!

June 7, 2011

they might need a better name than that….  anyway!  i figured out how to make tulle poofy things!

i made this little red one and wandered around looking for places to put it…

then i remembered some paper straws i ordered a couple weeks ago, and i made a wand!

and i went around “poofing” things and making my family wonder about my sanity.  i’ve got another idea, you’ll have to hold tight and see where this goes…

*poof*
