American Girl Uneven Bars

March 17, 2013

My girls weren’t interested in dolls until fairly recently.  My Mother in Law bought them American Girl Dolls a couple Christmases ago and I kinda thought it was a bad call because they’d rarely ever played with dolls up til then.  Lately the dolls are about all they’ve been playing with.  They’ll mix and match their clothes, they’ll create adventures for them to go on, and Little Girl’s haircut is modelled after her doll, Kit.

Through some random clicks on someone’s tablet the other day, we found  youtube videos on how to make handmade toys and games for the dolls.  When we saw gymnastics equipment, we figured we needed to get in on that action.

ta-da! uneven bars:

Made out of plumber’s piping, the pieces fit together easily enough that even the 6 year old can manage it.  Play gets a little rough so hubs said he’ll glue the pieces so it doesn’t fall apart while the dolls are swinging on it.  That gets in the way of playing.

All it consists of is piping cut down to (2) 18″, (2) 15″ and (4) 12″ pieces, 4 t joints and 4 elbow joints.  Pop it all together and voila!

We use ponytail holders looped on the “bars” and around the dolls’ wrists and they hang on pretty well!

We saw ones that had been spray painted, but I was nervous about the paint wearing off on the plastic parts of the dolls.  Maybe I’ll add some duct tape or fun patterned washi tape.  For now, the girls are happy as little clams with it just the way it is.  Well, other than they’ve added a folded up baby blanket underneath to use as a mat, and Big Girl’s doll is wearing a horse-riding helmet… NOW they love it the way it is! 😉

September Wrap-Up, Girlies style

October 4, 2012

They went back to school:

It’s been a big change having everyone in school all day.  I jumped out of the gate at a full gallop, cleaning and crafting and what-notting, but I’m quickly over that.  I’m gonna have to structure my time or we’ll all be in trouble.

The annual trail ride went on as planned.  The patriarch of the horse family next door passed away this summer and the trail ride was in question for only a few short minutes.  It was a beautiful day to spend next door!

We were treated to an impromptu race between the local(ish) city police and the grandson of our neighbor.  The grandson whipped the cop’s horse riding butt.  Once while barefoot.  And once while wearing his football cleats!

The girls started gymnastics.  I’m glad they’ve wanted to join something, I’m glad they’re sporty, but I’m interested to see how long we stick with it.  Little girl LOOOOVES it, and Big girl was ok with it til her face met the uneven bar last week and left her with a lightly bruised eye and a heavily bruised ego.  Now she says she’s never ever ever going back again ever.  (Til Monday when I talk her in to it.)

The weather this fall has been incredible, warm, sunny, absolutely gorgeous skies.  A perfect day for our local Chamber of Commerce/town  fair.  Best part for me?  Face. Paint.

I could’ve stood there and watched the face painting lady all day long.

But the children had rides to ride.

And slides to slide.

And flips to do:

We finished out the month with our grammer school’s fund-raiser jog-a-thon.  At the end of every lap, they collected a bracelet.  After complaining the entire 20 minutes of the first “heat”, Big girl’s bestie-friend showed up and they wanted to run with her.  In the end, they collected 20-some-odd bracelets a piece, which is equivalent to a 5K for each girl!!

I think they were talking about getting pedicures or going out for Happy Meals after…

Hunny got in on the fun, too.  He’s a great sport.

The way it looks, October will be even busier than September so I should rest up.  Coming up: Trip to NYC, SESAME, Someone’s getting married and more, more,

more!!
