it’s exciting to turn 5.

September 1, 2011

she did it!  my sweet baby turned 5.  she wanted a candyland themed birthday and i’d like to share the decorations and treats we made.  except the edible ones.  those are long gone.

we made giant game pieces out of construction paper and big honkin hard candies and lollipops out of dessert sized paper plates and cello wrap.  i knew all those empty tulle cardboard spools would come in handy!

we had originally set up outside, but a pretty big rain storm chased us in at the very last minute.

oh, how i love to hang things from a string…

we made super-cute barrettes for the birthday girl:

they’re made by tying bunches of water balloons together, then tying them on to a barrette.  SO easy and adorable!

we did goodie bags for the little people, here are some of the contents:

(that’s cotton candy in the push-pop containers.  a HUGE hit!)

rainbow homemade slice and bake almond cookies:

kinda laborious to make, but delicious.

AND! when put in a snack sized zipper bag with a clothespin and a piece of ribbon?  EVEN BETTER!

i had peaked by the time it came to decide on the cake, and since it was MY birthday too, i had decided i was done baking.  we ordered an undecorated birthday cake from the grocery store and decorated it ourselves.  pretty and sweet, just like the little birthday girl!

it was a sweet day for everyone.

cupcake shooters

April 14, 2011

so i saw these containers and had to have them:

and the ever-lovely Peg tipped me off to this blog post, and i haven’t slept since because i’ve been pondering all the possibilities.  my first trial was pretty much a copy from the blog, i just wanted to test out my materials and see if i could recreate them.  the potential for mess is great.

me and frosting and a small container?  it’s a recipe for disaster….  but i did ok i suppose.

I made some rainbow sugar cookies thinking i’d stack them in the holders with maybe some frosting or whipped cream, but i’m going to have to find some other recipes or cookie type cuz mah cookies, they are too poofy.  but pretty:

maybe if i crammed the raw dough down in the container that would work…  mmmm, botulism…  guess i’ll have another sleepless night or two.

if you’re interested in a little set of your own EMPTY push pop containers, click here.  i’ve got a few (or more than a few) to spare. =)

make some super cute snackies

and a fun little photo op:

(tell me, is it JUST me, or could these pass as Easter Island Statues?  just me?  whatever, i thought it was funneh.) (the real statues are called Moai, i’ve always had a little crush on them.)

they’re a tasty, tasty treat!

(thanks to Christy for giving me this idea.  super easy, fun and CUTE!)

Chocolate Cream de Menthe Cookies

December 22, 2010

Lookit me, using capital letters!  What is THAT about??  Must’ve been doing something official earlier.  ok, enough of that….

yum.  i hope.

1 pkg Chocolate Fudge Cake Mix

2 eggs

1/2 c butter, melted

1/4 firmly packed brown sugar

1 t vanilla extract

1 1/2 c Andes baking chips

Preheat oven to 350

Stir cake mix, eggs, butter, brown sugar and vanilla extract until thoroughly blended.

Stir in chips

Drop tablespoonfuls on to GREASED cookie sheet, bake 12-14 minutes. (ohdearlord, grease the pan)

Cool on sheets 2 minutes

my original recipe for these includes chocolate chips and nuts instead of the andes candies, but i figured i’d give it a go.  the packaged andes candies are actually just chopped full-sized candies, you could do it yourself if you don’t mind peeling candy… or putting your kids to work.

the verdict: delicious

chewy molasses-spice cookies

December 19, 2010

wanna hear the first naughty joke i ever heard?  it’s courtesy of my friend sheila, we were probably 10 years old:

there were 3 moles, a papa mole, a mama mole, and a baby mole. they all lived on a farm.  one moring the papa mole stuck his head out of the mole hole and said, “ooh i smell bacon.”   the mama mole wanted to smell it too, so she stuck her head out of the mole hole. “ooh, i smell eggs!”  baby mole wanted to smell this too, but there wasn’t enough room for his head too fit out of the hole. he said: “all i smell is mole-asses!!”

HA! i love that joke.  i made this receipe today for my sweet hubs, he’s been begging for mole-asses cookies for about 3 weeks.  at least.

2c flour

1 1/2 t baking soda

1 t ground cinnamon

1/2 t ground nutmeg

1/2 t salt

1 1/2 c sugar

1 1/2 sticks (12 T) unsalted butter, room temp

1 lg egg

1/4 c unsulfured molasses

preheat oven to 350. in med bowl whisk flour, soda, cinn, nutmeg and salt.  in shallow bowl, set aside 1/2 c sugar.  set aside.

beat butter and 1 c sugar til light and fluffy.  beat in egg and then molasses.  reduce speed to low, gradually add dry ingredients, beating just until dough forms.

using 1 level T per cookie, roll dough onto balls.  then roll each ball in reserved sugar to coat.

place ball on baking sheets, about 3″ apart.  bake 1 sheet at a time until edges of cookies are firm, 10-15 minutes.  cool 1 minute on cookie sheet, transfer to rack to cool completely.

notes for next time – my balls, i make them big.  little balls are ok, vanessa.  make your balls smaller.  that’s about it – quick, easy, not terribly messy and YUM.

fa la la la laaa, and all that good stuff

December 19, 2010

i’m getting old.  my memory is slipping.  i’ve decided this year i’m gonna make a bunch of cookies that aren’t my normal “go to” recipes and comment on the results… and maybe leave the receipe here, too.  that way, when hunny says “boy i wish you would make me those tasty cookies that were kinda brown, kinda sugary, kinda something….” we can refer back and maybe figure out what the bleep he is talking about.

also, my handmade recipe books are out of control.  there’s crap in there i’ll never make, there’s crap in there with the comment “these really sucked” – so why am i saving those?!?!  it’s time to weed out and get it together.  maybe.  i’m gonna at least try.

so get ready, holiday baking has started in queenvanna-land.

my hair *is* wild.

June 8, 2010

i’ve got a wild hair, i’m manic, i’ve got my hands on lots of things.  it must mean that company is on her way and it’s almost time for vacation.  i’m heavy into all things sesame street right now, and tinkering in a few things unrelated.

the sesame street visors, are TOO cute.

i’ve been dipping oreos:

 and

and dipping balloons…  this idea came straight from bakerella , where most of my ideas begin.  hers had homemade pudding in them, but i cannot STAND pudding, so i’m gonna fill ours with dirtcake… also because there is NO shortage of oreos in this house right now.

in progress

i’m about to go pop the balloons now and see what happens.  you’ll hear all about it if it’s a nightmare! =D
