when hollywood came a-callin’

December 20, 2011

I have given a couple of teasers about a project of mine being on Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, and after months and months of “it’s top secret, i can’t talk about it!” the show has aired and I can talk about it all i want.  Here, take 2 of these and call me in the a.m.

the call came on a Friday night at the very end of July. “can you make something like a picture of yours i found on flickr, but nothing like what’s in the picture?”  i’m pretty sure this is the picture the field producer was talking about:

with 7 drawers and big enough to put ornaments and trinkets in and Ty will tell the family every day….. and i didn’t hear anything else, cuz i heard Ty….Ty…. Ty…. *swoon*.  And in my house, what Ty wants, Ty gets, so i yesyesyes’d that lady and when i hung up the phone i just had no idea where to begin.  it was Friday night at 8:30. she had to have 2 of these “things”, whatever they were going to be in her hands in Ohio by Wednesday afternoon, they were filming on Thursday.  Throw in a few other things:  i had to work 8 hours at the scrapbook store.  I had to drop my children off at my parents’ an hour away on Saturday because on Sunday, we had tickets to see Craig Ferguson in Boston.  Boston is at LEAST a day trip from where we live.  There was no time for this.  but it’s for Tyyyyyyyy….

my husband and i stood in my craft room, looking at the various projects that we might alter to make what we needed, and my eyes came to rest on some IKEA boxes that i used for storage.  they’re awesome boxes, i wish i had 12 more sets… but conveniently enough, i had 2.  I arranged on the kitchen counter my vision:

so make it like this, but with this, and without this. and you know, better.

hunny planned a trip to home depot for 6a.m. the next day.  and while i was at work, he dragged out his saws and other stuff and made just what i asked for.

great!  now do it again!

Christy, my trusty minion and pal was with me through the decorative design and cutting and pasting.  and the trip to craig ferguson.  what a weekend.  Sunday before we left for Boston, we cut lots and lots of pieces.

monday, we were dilerious and pretty shouty (what else is new?), and we saw that hey, we were actually going to pull this together.

so many pieces….

it’s august in my diningroom Christmas sweatshop.  Yes, that’s a kissing ball made by a 4 year old last Christmas hanging from my light fixture.  it’s like Christmas all the time in my house.

and here we are, just about done:

They were shipped on Monday afternoon, one was “lost” in the mail for a day and caused me to age 12 years, and they all got where they needed to be for filming.  ABC is a little touchy about showing the actual folks from the show, so you’ll have to trust me, that’s Ty.  he’s all up in our drawers.  Yes, i’m gonna use that joke for as long as i can ride this out.

more next time.

Come and Play…

December 6, 2011

We aren’t usually terribly spontaneous people, but when i saw that Sesame Place was doing a winter/Christmas thing, i knew we had to go.  Shockingly, my sweet husband did not need much convincing.  The girls are growing so fast, Sesame won’t be cool forever.

we called it the queenvanna creations annual corporate Christmas party.

one girl did not think it was cool to skip a day of school.  oooh, she was mad mad mad.  she got over it once we were actually there… and she saw her friends:

we saw a show and rode all the rides 100 or so times,

spent some quality time with the big guy himself!

every little adorable detail was festive-fied.  so, so sweet.

it was a magical weekend for our little family.

Cue the Charlie Brown Christmas Music…

November 27, 2011

i hear it in my head, i love that Christmas music…  we went and got our tree today.  it could not’ve been a more beatuiful morning.

i got a chance to try out my new camera. aaaaand i’m in love.

we took a nice walk out in the field and picked the first tree that we thought was tall enough.  marked it with kris’s glove – this is very “laverne and shirley” to me.

he gets better and better at this every year.  of course, it probably helped that it was 45 degrees and no snow on the ground.

big girl was very interested in how we’d know which tree was ours once the kid in the ATV took it away on his trailor.  she’s remembering the ticket number.

it’s going to be a beautiful Christmas.

little tiny herb garden in a colander

July 12, 2011

one from the files of “i saw this on pinterest”…  a metal colander as a planter.

i’ve forgone the garden that i have tried so hard to have every year that we’ve been in this house and just went with working on the plants around the yard that were already there.  they’re doing pretty good.  we’ve got some white flowers, some yellow flowers, some irises and daisies…  lots of stuff that’s hard to kill.

i went with a tiny herb garden in my metal strainer:

it’s an ecclectic blend of herbs, mint, dill and (i think) basil, but these are the ones that i could see myself using.  i was going to try to find a colander at the thrift store, but i just don’t get out that way very often.  and this one was 4 smackers at Walmart.  i bought the herbs in quart pots, and broke them in half, planting one part here and the other part of each in the ground on the edge of my garage.

i imagine this one will dry out a lot faster because of the holes, but i love the kitchen outdoors theme, it cracks me up a little.  i might still see what i can find at tag sales or if i get to the thrift store, it might be cute to have 2 or 3 in different sizes on my back step!

and where have YOU been?

May 24, 2011

i’ve been doing stuff.  and things.  the little one had her preschool art show.  it was incredible, as is everything they do at that preschool.

little girl was very proud.

the next day i went to florida to visit my sister and friends.  in an airplane.  all. by. myself.

we took a few pictures (or 1,800 to be a little more exact)

it was kinda foreign to me to not have to count people or be worried about anyone wandering off.  it was wonderful.  that is not to say that we did not act a little crazy.  we had tshirts made.  we jumped on the beach at sunset.  (photo by shutter jo)

wholesome fun!

when i got back, i celebrated my 10 year wedding anniversary with hunny.  it was a low key event, including a trip to olive garden with the girls.  we’re low-key kinda people.

now we’re finishing up preschool this week, i’m finishing up my time on their Board of Managers, and it feels a little weird to just be ending….  but there’s lots we’re planning.  big girl still has a few weeks of kindergarten, and pretty soon it’ll be time for our annual treck to elmo’s house.  by then, summer will be in full gear.  bring it on!!

Happy new year and all that good stuff.  I got nuthin’ over here.  We loved all the holidays, and Christmas is just about all put away, except the tree that needs to go to the curb, but hunny doesn’t seem to be in an enormous hurry to get it out, so there it sits…. hogging up precious toy-storage space and making me edgy…  i’m not spending much time in the livingroom, it’s annoying me that. much.

i did some baking today…

cheesecake squares for a party tomorrow…

and prep for weekend cakeballs.

this girl:

my baby… is getting too big.  as i started typing this, the whole gang (well, the 2 of them) got in trouble for being fresh to each other and are currently sitting near the naughty seat… NEAR it, because there’s christmas tree lights ON it at the moment.  so even if she LOOKS big, she’s still just 4 years old.  and i’m ready to put the holidays away.

looking forward to 2011.

i’m tired of myself…

November 19, 2010

but it is november, it’s the start of craft show season for me, it’s the start of the holidays and the end of the year, so… lots and lots and lots of calendars.  the 2 in the middle are a special order, and the 2 on the bottom and the pieces on top are just because.  i’m sure there will be amany more in the days to come!
